Temporary Extended Status

Extended for Ethiopia

Secretary Mayorkas declared an 18-month extension and redesignation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Ethiopia, valid from June 13, 2024, to December 12, 2025, due to persistent armed conflict and temporary adverse conditions in Ethiopia. The Federal Register notice outlines the process for new applications and renewals under this TPS extension.

The decision follows discussions with various agencies, highlighting ongoing crises in Ethiopia such as armed conflicts, human rights violations, and environmental challenges like droughts and disease outbreaks, creating urgent humanitarian needs.

Additionally, a Special Student Relief notice benefits F-1 nonimmigrant students from Ethiopia, enabling eligible students to seek employment authorization, adjust work hours during school terms, and reduce their course load while maintaining F-1 status through the TPS period.

Secretary Mayorkas emphasized TPS's role in safeguarding individuals in the U.S. from deportation when returning home poses risks. The extension allows around 2,300 current TPS beneficiaries to maintain their status, provided they re-register and meet eligibility criteria.

Moreover, the redesignation permits an estimated 12,800 new Ethiopian applicants (or stateless individuals previously residing in Ethiopia) to apply for TPS if they arrived before April 11, 2024, and have continuously resided in the U.S. since then.

Re-registration is open for prior TPS holders during the 60-day period from April 15 to June 14, 2024, ensuring uninterrupted TPS and employment authorization. USCIS extends the validity of existing Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) until June 12, 2025, recognizing potential delays in issuing new ones.

USCIS continues processing pending applications from previous TPS designations. Individuals with pending Form I-821 or I-765 as of April 15, 2024, are not required to reapply. Approved applications grant TPS and an EAD valid until December 12, 2025.

Under the redesignation, eligible individuals without TPS can apply using Form I-821 during the registration period from April 15, 2024, to December 12, 2025, and may also request TPS-related EADs and travel authorization.
