USCIS Updates Fees: Biometrics Costs Now Included in Application Fees

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has implemented a significant change aimed at simplifying and reducing the cost of immigration processes.

Starting April 1, 2024, the additional fee for biometrics, such as fingerprints and photographs, has been eliminated for most applications.

Understanding Biometrics and Their Purpose

Biometrics, including fingerprints and photographs, are unique physical traits collected by USCIS to verify applicants' identities and ensure the integrity of the immigration system.

What Has Changed?

With the new rule, the separate biometrics fee has been incorporated into the main filing fee for most applications, reducing the number of applications requiring an extra fee. This change is designed to make the process more efficient and affordable.

Previously, a separate biometrics fee was required for:

  • Green Cards (Form I-485): Used for adjusting status to lawful permanent resident.
  • Work Permits (Form I-765): Used to apply for work authorization in the U.S.
  • Travel Documents (Form I-131): Used for permission to travel outside the U.S. and return as a lawful permanent resident or other eligible nonimmigrant.
  • Naturalization (Form N-400): Used to apply for U.S. citizenship.
  • Various other forms: Many other applications also required a separate biometrics fee.

Prior Changes

Since October 1, 2023, the biometrics fee was waived for those using Form I-539 (Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status).

Are There Any Exceptions?

Most applications are affected by this change, but there are exceptions. Applicants for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and certain cases handled by the Executive Office for Immigration Review will still need to pay a $30 biometrics fee due to additional processing requirements.

Why Did USCIS Implement This Change?

USCIS decided to eliminate the separate biometrics fee to simplify the application process and make it more accessible, responding to feedback from stakeholders. By including the biometrics fee in the main filing fee, USCIS aims to streamline the process, improve cost recovery, and balance affordability with operational needs, thereby ensuring a more transparent and accessible experience for applicants.
